We hear rumours about all these fabulous writers conventions in the Bahamas or on gorgeous Caribbean cruise ships.  We periodically receive newsletters announcing us that a booksigning event is taking place tomorrow in Georgia, Carolina, Delaware, and even in the some remote zones of Alaska. We read of  people waiting in line for their turn in buying the so-long-waited-for last novel of the worldwide famous saga, still hot from the press, in New York bookshop…

Ci giungono voci di tutte le spettacolari conventions di scrittori alle Bahamas o su favolose navi da crociera nei Caraibi. Riceviamo di tanto in tanto newsletters che ci annunciano che un’autrice famosa domani incontrerà i suoi lettori e autograferà i suoi libri in Georgia, Carolina, Delaware, e magari anche in qualche angolo remoto dell’Alaska. Leggiamo di persone che fanno la fila davanti alle librerie di New York per comprare l’ultimo, attesissimo romanzo della celeberrima saga conosciuta in tutto il mondo, ancora caldo perché appena uscito dalle rotative…

And what’s left for us, we poor inhabitants of what once upon a time was generally considered as the cultural centre of the world ?

E cosa resta a noi, le poveri abitanti di quello che una volta era comunemente considerato come il centro culturale del mondo?

Well, how to say it in a politically correct way ?... crumbs.

Our little nations do not sell enough books to justify any author’s tour.

Only few books are translated in our own languages, and the translations are often poor and even shortened. Covers are different  from the originals; stepbacks do not exist. Sagas are seldom completed.

Readers desperate enough to read the original books in English face even more difficulties. Few bookshops have them, and even fewer websites; and for those few, shipping fees are outrageous. Not to mention the additional custom duties for those who order from the US… :P

And as a result, here we are, like starving beggar girls with our noses pressed to the window of a pastry shop - hearing about all the marvellous events we cannot attend, the fantastic authors we cannot meet, the wonderful books we cannot read.

Be’, come dirlo in modo politicamente corretto?... poche briciole.

Le nostre nazioni, prese singolarmente, sono piccole e non vendono abbastanza libri da giustificare lo spostamento di un’autrice dagli Stati Uniti.

I libri tradotti nella nostra lingua sono pochi, le traduzioni sono spesso malfatte e anche tagliate rispetto all’originale. Le copertine sono diverse da quelle originali; i retrocopertina non esistono. Le saghe vengono completate di rado.

Lettrici tanto disperate da leggere i libri nella versione originale inglese devono fare i conti con difficoltà ancora maggiori. Le librerie che li tengono sono poche, ancora meno i siti web di vendita on line; e, su questi pochi siti, le spese di spedizione sono vergognose. Per non parlare delle imposte e dei dazi doganali per chi ordina direttamente dagli Stati Uniti…

Il risultato finale è che ce ne restiamo qui, come tante piccole mendicanti affamate, con il naso appiccicato alla vetrina di una pasticceria, a farci raccontare dagli altri i meravigliosi eventi a cui NON possiamo partecipare, gli autori superlativi che NON possiamo incontrare, gli splendidi libri che NON possiamo leggere.

But  we are happy to say that these sad days now belong to the past, and that a brighter dawn starts rising ! yes, because we had the luck of spending a fantastic afternoon with one of our favourite authors, Eloisa James ! Now it’s your turn, America, do be green with envy!

Ma oggi siamo felici di annunciarvi che questi giorni tristi appartengono ormai al passato, e che l’alba di una nuova era sta finalmente per sorgere! Sì, perché abbiamo avuto la fortuna di passare un fantastico pomeriggio con una delle nostre autrici preferite, Eloisa James! Una volta tanto tocca a te, America, diventare verde d’invidia!

As we’ve already mentioned in our blog ( see EJ: Portrait of a Writer), both Eloisa and her husband, Alessandro Vettori, are professors, and they love to spend in Italy ( Alessandro is from Florence) their sabbatical, and their summer holidays too when they are working. So our idea was, well, why don’t we take advantage of this and ask them if we can meet? So we took all our courage in two hands, we asked and, guess what?, they accepted !

Come abbiamo già accennato nel nostro blog (vedi EJ: Portrait of a Writer), sia Eloisa che suo marito, Alessandro Vettori, sono professori universitari, e amano passare i loro periodi sabbatici in Italia (Alessandro è di Firenze), e le loro vacanze estive quando lavorano. Così la nostra idea è stata: perché non ne approfittiamo e gli chiediamo se ci possiamo incontrare? Così abbiamo preso il coraggio a due mani, abbiamo chiesto un incontro e, indovinate un po’?, hanno accettato!

The terrific event happened on the 22nd July MMVI A.D., in Florence. After a frantic exchange of emails, phone calls, texts and photos, Elisa, Maria Rosa and Doris finally met at Santa Maria Novella station ( it wasn’t as smooth as it seems!). As soon as we met of course not even the weariness for the long trip could stop our tongues to wander, we were really agog, and too happy to meet each other to the point that we almost ( not really almost) missed our appointment at one o’clock with Eloisa James!

Il memorabile evento si è tenuto addì 22 luglio 2006, a Firenze. Dopo un frenetico scambio di email, telefonate, sms e foto, Elisa, Maria Rosa e Doris finalmente si sono incontrate alla Stazione di Santa Maria Novella (non è stato così semplice come sembra!). Quando ci siamo incontrate naturalmente nemmeno la stanchezza del lungo viaggio ha potuto impedirci di metterci a chiacchierare, e siamo partite subito in quarta: eravamo così contente di vederci che abbiamo rischiato (c’è davvero mancato poco) di arrivare in ritardo al nostro appuntamento dell’una con Eloisa James!

At five to one we got to Piazza della Signoria, and we were startled to find so many people. How strange – so many tourists in Florence, moreover in July? How is it possible? ( ok, ok, we know, now it’s clear for everybody that none of us is from the region ).

All’una meno cinque siamo andate a Piazza della Signoria, e siamo rimaste stupite di trovarla così affollata. Che strano, tanti turisti a Firenze, e a luglio per giunta? Come è possibile? (va bene, va bene, lo sappiamo, adesso è evidente per tutti che nessuna di noi viene dalla Toscana).

We moved towards the David, but the crowd gathered around it made it impossible to see and be seen. Then came the suggestion to show one of her books, Elisa spotted a James-looking couple, and Doris, whose eyesight is rapidly matching the one of a mole, “casually” moved towards them.

Fortunately Eloisa’s husband, Alessandro, noticed us – or better, Eloisa’s book. To our excuse we can say that a pair of sunglasses are a great shade to sun and recognition!!

Ci siamo avvicinati al David, ma c’era talmente tanta ressa intorno ad esso che era impossibile vedere ed essere viste. Poi una di noi ha suggerito di tirare fuori uno dei libri di Eloisa mettendolo bene in evidenza, Elisa ha adocchiato una coppia che poteva assomigliare ai nostri ospiti, e Doris, la cui vista è più o meno quella di una talpa, “casualmente” si è avvicinata alla coppia. Fortunatamente il marito di Eloisa, Alessandro, ci ha notato, o meglio, ha notato il libro di Eloisa. A nostra discolpa possiamo solo dire che gli occhiali neri proteggono benissimo dal sole, ma anche dagli sguardi altrui!!

Eloisa and Alessandro took us to a lovely little restaurant behind Piazza della Signoria, where, they said, they often take their children when they are in town. They were so friendly that they quickly put us at ease, and after few minutes we were already engrossed in conversation, and the waiter had to come twice to take our orders!!!

Eloisa e Alessandro ci hanno portate in un delizioso ristorantino dietro Piazza della Signoria, dove, ci hanno detto, portano spesso i loro bambini quando sono in città. Sono stati così cordiali e amichevoli che ci hanno immediatamente messo a nostro agio, e dopo pochi minuti eravamo già talmente immersi nella conversazione, che il cameriere è dovuto passare due volte per prendere le ordinazioni!!!

Well, what to say ? Eloisa is fantastic, she talked freely about everything, answering all our questions, and her husband Alessandro was always present, attentive, entertaining and supportive.

They are really a lovely, dashing and close couple: Alessandro is patently proud of his wife’s writing skills and achievements, and he follows her career attentively. Gazing at them it was impossible not to think of Eloisa’s article “Finding true love”( btw Alessandro still has wild hair to his shoulder, exactly as she told in the article – the knighthood didn’t make him change his look!).

We talked a lot. At the beginning we asked Eloisa if we had to address her as Mary or Eloisa, and she said “Mary” , that is her true name, Eloisa being a nom de plume

Then we talked about the public opinion about romance novels, and the fact that is still seen by many (especially in Europe, not to mention Italy) as a low literary genre, and that sometimes people ask her if she writes a sort of porn for women!!

The way Eloisa started writing romance novels is amazing. In fact she was married, she wanted a second baby - she grew up in a family of six and she couldn’t imagine being an only child - while her husband didn’t, and he took as excuse their heavy student loans ( Mary got M. Phil. at Oxford, and that was a big dent on their budget), so Mary told him that she was going to take care of them.

That’s how she started writing Potent Pleasures. It was Alessandro who took the phone call announcing that the book was bought for much more than what they expected ( and more than enough to cover the student loan), and that they got a deal for 3 books!!

The baby came of course short after ( as Alessandro pointed out smiling, “that was never a problem!”), but at that point she loved writing so much, that she just couldn’t stop doing it!

Be’, che dirvi? Eloisa è stata fantastica, ha parlato con grande naturalezza di tutto, rispondendo a tutte le nostre domande, e suo marito Alessandro è sempre stato presente, attento, di compagnia e premuroso. Sono veramente una coppia deliziosa, simpatica ed affiatata: Alessandro è palesemente orgoglioso dell’abilità di scrittrice della moglie e dei suoi successi, e segue la sua carriera con attenzione. Guardandoli è impossibile non pensare all’articolo di Eloisa “Finding true love” (tra l’altro Alessandro porta ancora i capelli ribelli lunghi fino alle spalle, esattamente come lei ha scritto nell’articolo: evidentemente ricevere il titolo di Cavaliere non gli ha fatto cambiare look!).

Abbiamo parlato molto. All’inizio abbiamo chiesto a Eloisa se la dovevamo chiamare Mary o Eloisa, e lei ci ha detto “Mary”, che è il suo vero nome, infatti Eloisa è il suo pseudonimo come scrittrice. Poi abbiamo discusso dell’opinione comune sui romanzi rosa, e sul fatto che è ancora visto come letteratura di serie B (specialmente in Europa, figuriamoci in Italia), e che qualche volta la gente le chiede se scrive romanzi pornografici per donne!!

Il modo in cui Eloisa ha iniziato a scrivere romanzi rosa è sorprendente. All’epoca infatti era già sposata, e desiderava avere un secondo bambino - è cresciuta in una famiglia di sei persone e l’idea di essere figli unici per lei è inconcepibile - mentre suo marito non era d’accordo, e adduceva come scusa per non avere altri figli il fatto che dovevano ancora restituire i prestiti scolastici (Mary ha fatto un dottorato a Oxford, e questo è stato un duro colpo al loro budget famigliare): Mary allora gli ha detto che se ne sarebbe fatta carico lei. Così ha cominciato a scrivere Potent Pleasures. È stato proprio Alessandro che ha risposto alla telefonata che annunciava che il romanzo era stato acquistato per una somma molto maggiore di quella che si aspettavano (e più che sufficiente per coprire i loro prestiti scolastici), e che come se non bastasse avevano anche ottenuto un contratto per altri 3 libri!!

Il figlio, naturalmente, è arrivato dopo poco (come Alessandro ha sottolineato sorridendo, “questo non è mai stato un problema!”) ma a quel punto Eloisa amava ormai tanto scrivere, che non è più riuscita a smettere!

She met a lot of other fellow romance writers, and though sometimes the authors world is a tough one, she managed to create a very close friendship with Teresa Medeiros, Lisa Kleypas, Connie Brockway, Julia Quinn, Christina Dodd, Elizabeth Bevarly. They share ideas and comments about each other’s books, they discuss the problems they’re facing while writing, and they cross fingers when a new book from a friend is out, and even buy it as soon as it’s on the bookstores’ shelves to wish good luck with sales! And they have fun together in their blog Squawk radio – most pictures being courtesy of Connie’s graphic ability ^_^

There are even Easter eggs in their novels, meaning that they often refer to a friend by the means of a character’s name or similar ( after Maria Rosa heard that, she started at once digging in her prodigious memory – she can keep in her mind all the names of all the secondary characters of all the sagas she read ten years ago, and sometimes even of those she hasn’t read yet – and immediately found one in a Teresa Medeiros’ recent books… a little girl’s name… hint, hint!). Having heard that, it’s not difficult now to better understand the importance that women friendship has in all Eloisa’s books. And it’s nice to know that business matters can’t spoil it, when it’s sincere.

Eloisa ha quindi conosciuto molte delle sue colleghe scrittrici, e anche se a volte il mondo degli autori può essere davvero competitivo, è riuscita a sviluppare una stretta amicizia con Teresa Medeiros, Lisa Kleypas, Connie Brockway, Julia Quinn, Christina Dodd, Elizabeth Bevarly. Commentano tra di loro tutti i loro romanzi, discutono i problemi che affrontano mentre stanno scrivendo, e fanno il tifo l’una per l’altra e, quando sta per uscire un nuovo libro di una di loro, addirittura lo comprano per prime non appena è in vendita in libreria, per scaramanzia, così che le vendite vadano bene! E, come se non bastasse, si divertono insieme come matte nel loro blog Squawk Radio, dove la maggior parte dei disegni sono il frutto dell’abilità grafica di Connie ^_^.

Nei loro romanzi ci sono anche delle Easter eggs, cioè delle “sorprese” nascoste, nel senso che spesso una di loro fa riferimento ad un’altra usando il nome di un personaggio, o simili (quando Maria Rosa ha sentito questo, ha cominciato subito a frugare nella sua memoria prodigiosa – riesce a ricordare tutti i nomi di tutti i personaggi secondari di tutte le saghe che ha letto negli ultimi dieci anni, e qualche volta anche di quelle che non ha ancora letto - e ne ha subito trovato uno in uno degli ultimi libri di Teresa Medeiros … il nome di una bambina… avete capito qual è?).

Dopo aver sentito tutto questo, ci è facile ora capire perché l’amicizia tra donne ha tanta importanza in tutti i romanzi di Eloisa. Ed è bello vedere che le questioni economiche non riescono a sciuparla, quand’è sincera.

Of course, we cannot avoid asking for some insight about the last instalment of the marvellous Essex sisters saga, “ Pleasure for pleasure” (does it not sound to you a bit like Measure for Measure? This is Eloisa’s Shakespearean background showing up ! ^__^).

We were satisfied to the bone ( bone being the operative word ) in hearing that in spite of all the troubles and difficulties she has to face, Josie is NOT loosing any weight ! Hurray ! ( we already knew by personal experience that the legend that love pains can work as a régime is just a fool’s tale, and now we have the proof. )

In spite of the fact that Eloisa didn’t indicate any of the characters of her novels as her favourite one - “ I love them all, in the same way”, she said - she also added “… but Josie is special”. And last but not least, be prepared everybody: Mayne, the “tired rake”, the unluckiest man ever, will be back! unmatched ? leg-shackled? dismissed ? … well, let’s wait and see…

Naturalmente, non abbiamo potuto fare a meno di chiedere qualche anticipazione dell’ultimo episodio della meravigliosa saga delle sorelle Essex, “Pleasure for Pleasure” (non suona un po’ come Measure for Measure? ecco il background shakespeariano di Eloisa che salta fuori!)

Enorme ( la scelta del termine non è casuale… ) è stata la nostra soddisfazione quando abbiamo saputo che, nonostante tutti i problemi e le difficoltà che dovrà affrontare, Josie NON dimagrirà! Evviva! (sapevamo tutte per esperienza personale che la diceria che le sofferenze d’amore possono rimpiazzare una dieta è solo una leggenda popolare, ed ora ne abbiamo la prova.)

Malgrado Eloisa non ci abbia indicato una predilezione particolare per nessuno dei personaggi dei suoi romanzi - “Li amo tutti, allo stesso modo”, ha detto - ha però anche aggiunto “… ma Josie è speciale”. E, dulcis in fundo, reggetevi forte: Mayne, il “libertino stanco”, l’uomo più sfortunato della terra, ritornerà ! Single? Con la fede al dito? Piantato in asso? … be’ non ci resta che aspettare e stare a vedere…

And we, Essex-addicted, couldn’t help but think with all our regret that this novel will be the 4^th, so the last one by Eloisa’s saga planning.

But we mustn’t despair! Eloisa is already at work on a new saga set in Georgian England, that will go by the name of Desperate Duchesses ( did anybody hear, by chance, about a series called Desperate housewives ? ^_* ). When questioned about the change of settings, she said that she wants now to try something different from Regency period.“ Georgian times were much wilder: more freedom was allowed to women, they could even leave their husbands, travel to France and get a divorce. It’s a wild, unruly period that allows different and more daring plots from Regency.”

And she gave us some little, but intriguing hints about a wicked chess game in which a woman offers a very special prize: herself… We had it from the best authority ( Alessandro, who read the proof) that this first book is really interesting! Are you impatient to read it? We surely are!

E noi, che siamo ormai troppo affezionate alle sorelle Essex per vivere senza di loro, non possiamo fare a meno di pensare, con sommo dispiacere, che questo romanzo sarà putroppo il quarto, ossia l’ultimo della saga così come Eloisa l’ha progettata.

Ma niente paura! Eloisa è già al lavoro su una nuova saga ambientata nell’Inghilterra georgiana, che prenderà il nome di Desperate Duchesses (qualcuna di voi ha mai sentito parlare, per caso, di un telefilm chiamato Desperate Housewifes?). Quando le abbiamo chiesto del perché di questo cambio di ambientazione, Eloisa ha detto che voleva provare qualcosa di diverso dal periodo della Reggenza. “L’epoca georgiana era molto più ribelle: alle donne era permessa una maggiore liberta, potevano addirittura lasciare i loro mariti, andare in Francia e ottenere il divorzio. È un periodo ribelle e senza regole, che permette trame diverse e più ardite rispetto alla Reggenza.” E ci ha dato qualche piccolo indizio su una partita a scacchi molto maliziosa, in cui una donna mette in palio un premio davvero particolare: se stessa… Un’autorità in materia ( ovvero Alessandro, che ha letto la bozza del romanzo) ci ha detto che questo primo libro è davvero interessante! Siete impazienti di leggerlo? Noi lo siamo di sicuro!

Eloisa’s ability to master different ages is impressive! We asked her how she manage to handle historical details so smoothly, and she told us that for her is not difficult, thanks to her cultural background. After all she is a  scholar of English literature and history : so she doesn’t need really to do specific researches, since, as she said, “when I start to write book, it’s already all in my mind.” Only, when she’s through with a book she sends it to a friend, who is an expert in Regency period, to give it the very last polish, to make sure that it won’t carry mistake or worst modernism.

L’abilità di Eloisa di gestire epoche diverse è impressionante! Le abbiamo chiesto come riesce a utilizzare con tanta facilità tutti questi dettagli storici, e ci ha risposto che per lei non è difficile, grazie al suo background culturale. Dopo tutto lei è una studiosa di storia e letteratura inglese: quindi, in realtà non deve fare ricerche specifiche, dato che, come ci ha detto, “quando incomincio a scrivere un libro, è già tutto nella mia mente.” Unica cosa, quando ha terminato un romanzo, lo manda ad un’amica, che è un’esperta del periodo della Reggenza, per dargli l’ultima rifinitura, ed essere sicura che non si siano errori o, peggio ancora, modernismi.

Can you guess which was the perfect conclusion to a great day? Alessandro and Eloisa took us to a well supplied bookstore where you can find HTF romance books, too ( Elisa, of course, had an instant bookaholicism attack and couldn’t resist to the threat of adding a new bunch of books to the 1400+ already in her private collection: she’s buying new shelves next week, so she simply cannot leave them empty! ).

Riuscite ad immaginare qual è stata la perfetta conclusione di una giornata così memorabile? Alessandro e Eloisa ci hanno portato in una libreria molto fornita, dove si possono trovare, tra l’altro, romanzi rosa rari  e fuori stampa (Elisa, naturalmente, ha avuto un attacco immediato di librite acuta e non è riuscita a resistere alla tentazione di accaparrarsi una valigia intera di libri, che aggiungerà alla sua piccola collezione privata di poco più di 1400 volumi: in fondo, aveva già programmato di comprare una libreria nuova settimana prossima, non può certo lasciarla vuota!).

After taking few pictures together ( that we will not show you not to spoil our secret career as top models at Palazzo Pitti) we left Eloisa and Alessandro thanking them once again for their warm welcome, and all their time, incredible kindness and patience (and the nice lunch too!). When Eloisa’s books will be translated in Italy we’re sure there will be many, many more fans waiting in line for meeting her – but hey girls, sorry: we arrived first !

Dopo aver fatto alcune fotografie (che non vi mostreremo, per non rovinare la nostra doppia vita come indossatrici top-model a Palazzo Pitti) abbiamo lasciato Eloisa e Alessandro, ringraziandoli ancora per la loro affettuosa accoglienza, e per l’incredibile gentilezza, la pazienza ed il tempo che ci hanno dedicato (per non paralare dell’ottimo pranzo che ci hanno offerto!). Quando i romanzi di Eloisa saranno tradotti in Italia siamo sicure che ci saranno molte, molte più ammiratrici che faranno la fila per incontrarla, ma ragazze, ci spiace per voi: noi siamo arrivate per prime!
