When it comes to romance, I want a story I can believe. If I don’t believe it could really happen, it loses it’s appeal. This is one of the things that makes this book so wonderful in my mind. The problems they face are real concerns for the period and the characters keep to their roles both in society. That said, I was also pleased to see that the Heroine was not a doormat.
This book is a real tease. Just when you think the pair will have their moment something always seems to interrupt, dragging out the nice slow burn through the entire story. Even better, the smut fit nicely within the plot.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a good read.

This story touched me. I absolutely loved it. I loved Carina's strength, endurance, and faith to continue with her mission to find her family. She was a very funny character, as well as she dealt with her duties to Count Luciano about adding to her time that she would have to serve him. From start to finish it was a story that I did not want to end. Now I am wondering if there is more to come from this story. I would love to read more if there is! Those who love fairy tale romances must read Carina and the Nobleman!


Quando si tratta di romance, quello che voglio è una storia credibile. Se non riesco a credere che le cose avrebbero potuto effettivamente avvenire in quel modo, la storia perde il suo fascino. Questa è una delle cose che rendono questo libro così meraviglioso a mio parere. I problemi che affrontano sono le vere preoccupazioni dell’epoca ed i personaggi mantengono i loro giusti ruoli in società. Detto questo, mi ha fatto anche piacere vedere che l’eroina non si lascia trattare come uno strofinaccio.
Questo libro è davvero stuzzicante. Proprio quando pensi che la coppia potrà stare insieme, arriva sempre ad interromperli, così che la sensazione di eccitante attesa si prolunga attraverso l’intera storia. E, ancora meglio, la sensualità si adatta bene alla trama.
Raccomando caldamente questo romanzo a chiunque abbia voglia di leggere qualcosa di bello.

Questa storia mi ha colpito. L’ho davvero adorata. Ho amata la forza di Carina, la sua resistenza, e il modo fiducioso con cui prosegue nella missione di ritrovare la propria famiglia. Ha dei momenti molto divertenti, ad esempio quando inizia a lavorare per il Conte Luciano, e calcola per quanto tempo dovrà servirlo. E’ stata una storia che non volevo finisse mai. E adesso mi chiedo se ci sarà un seguito. Se ce ne sarà uno, mi piacerebbe leggerlo! Coloro che amano le storie d’amore che sembrano fiabe devono leggere Carina and the Nobleman!

ABOUT THE TRILOGY – LA TRILOGIA

“Carina and the Nobleman” is the first book of the Sisters of Destiny trilogy about three psychic sisters separated at birth. Carina takes place in Northern Italy in 1425. Her psychic ability is seeing visions. Near the end of the book, Carina and Luciano travel to Andalusia to find one of her sisters.

“Charlotte and the Gypsy” is the second book in the trilogy and takes place in a Gypsy camp in Andalusia. Although she was raised by the Gypsies, Charlotte (Char) has never felt she belonged. She was promised to Rafael Cazares when she was 8 years old. He deceived her on the eve of their wedding and Rafael left camp. The story begins three years later when he returns to honor the arranged marriage. Charlotte's psychic ability is clairaudience. She hears what other people are thinking, an ability she cannot control. Near the end of this book, Charlotte and Rafael travel to England to find the third sister.

“Callie and the Knight” is the last book in the trilogy and takes place near London. Callie must marry a knight she has never met because her adoptive family needs the knight's wealth to survive. But Sir Quinten (Quint) Sutcliff has his own reasons for marrying Callie Barclay. Callie's psychic ability is clairsentience. She can feel what other people are feeling. Near the end of this book, all three sisters are united, and together, with their husbands, they go in search of their birthplace. In order to know their destiny in life, they must first learn about their past.

“Carina and the Nobleman” è il primo libro della trilogia “Le sorelle del Destino” (Sisters of Destiny) che parla di tre sorelle dotate di poteri paranormali, separate alla nascita. La storia si svolge nel 1425, nell’Italia settentrionale. La facoltà “psi” di Carina consiste nel fatto che ha delle visioni. Nella parte finale del libro, Carina e Luciano andranno in Andalusia per trovare una delle sorelle della ragazza.

“Charlotte and the Gypsy” è il secondo libro della trilogia, ed è ambientato in un accampamento di zingari in Andalusia. Benché sia stata allevata dagli zingari, Charlotte (Char) non si è mai sentita una di loro. E’ stata promessa in sposa a Rafael Cazares quando aveva 8 anni. Rafael l’ha piantata in asso alla vigilia delle nozze, e se n’è andato dall’accampamento. La storia inizia tre anni dopo, quando lui torna per far fede al suo impegno e sposarla. La facoltà “psi” di Charlotte è la chiarudienza. Lei può sentire quello che le altre persone stanno pensando, ma è un potere che non riesce a controllare. Verso la fine del libro, Charlotte e Rafael si recheranno in Inghilterra per rintracciare la terza sorella.

“Callie and the Knight” è l’ultimo libro della trilogia ed è ambientato nei paraggi di Londra. Callie deve sposare un cavaliere che non ha mai incontrato in vita sua, perché la sua famiglia adottiva per tirare avanti ha bisogno della ricchezza che il cavaliere può offrire loro. Ma Sir Quinten (Quint) Sutcliff ha le sue ragioni per sposare Callie Barclay. La facoltà “psi” di Callie è l’empatia. Lei prova le emozioni che provano le persone che la circondano. Alla fine del libro, tutt’e tre le sorelle si riuniscono, ed insieme, con i loro mariti, vanno in cerca del luogo in cui sono nate. Per capire quale sarà il loro destino nella vita, devono prima sapere tutto sul loro passato.

In this scene, Count Luciano Ruggero is sitting alone in his steam bath after his friend and foreman, Filippo, left. At this point in the story, Luciano and Carina have not made love yet, but previous circumstances allowed them to see each other without clothing.

Once alone, Luciano’s head immediately filled with teasing images of Carina. He wished he knew what had happened last night to make her leave in haste without the pouch she had sought. He rose and lifted the bucket of water. Scooping out a ladle full, he poured it onto the rocks. Sizzling steam shot upward, and he turned his face aside to avoid burning his eyes. He returned to the bench. Not a moment later, the door opened.

“Decide to come back for more torture, Filippo?” His laughter died the instant his eyes met hers.

Carina held back a gulp of air. She’d been curious about the steam bath, but she hadn’t expected to find the count here this early in the day.
Unduly ashamed for intruding on the man’s private bath, she turned to leave. His commanding tone when he spoke her name stopped her.

She cast her eyes down to the floor. “My lord, I truly apologize. I did not know you were here.”

“Did you have in mind to use the bath?”

“No, my lord. I was curious, that is all.”

His silence lifted her head. She forced her gaze from slipping down his slick torso and kept it fastened to the amusement in his sparkling eyes. Beads of perspiration rolled down her temples and between her breasts. In mere seconds, her lightweight tunic clung intimately to her body.

“Close the door, Carina. You are letting the steam out.”

She retreated.

“No, maiden. Do not leave. Step in and close the door behind you.”

The low vibration of his voice spread a shiver of misgiving down her spine. “Since you are here, join me.”

Alarm embraced her instantly. “No, my lord. It would not be proper.”

“Come now, Carina. Have we not seen each other in the flesh?”

It was for that reason she’d not succumb to his request. The sight of him sans clothing freed the wanton side in her, and she feared the result.

“I cannot, my lord.”

He rose like a mighty god and gracefully moved closer. She pressed back against the door, her hand feeling recklessly for the handle. She’d escape if only she could find the damned handle. With the count’s steadfast approach, panic rumbled through her being. Just when her fingers brushed over the heated brass, Count Ruggero tugged her away and forced her to the length of his damp body. His mouth hovered a breath above hers.

“Please, my lord,” she whispered. “Please release me.”

“Sì, my sweet maiden. I will release you as you will release me from my self-imposed exile. From two years of hell,” he gritted. “From too many months of lying alone in my bed at night, wishing for a comely wench who could make me forget my troubles.”

Carina’s will crumbled the instant their lips met. Propriety became lost in the sweltering heat of the steam and the pressure of the count’s hard body pressed against hers. She surrendered to the toxic combination and the urgency in his kiss. Of a sudden, his need infected hers and she circled her arms around his waist, splaying her fingers over the dense muscles at his back. When the kiss deepened, Carina felt utterly helpless and realized resisting Count Ruggero was not in her immediate plans.

In questa scena, il conte Luciano Ruggero è seduto da solo nella sauna dopo che Filippo,suo attendente e suo amico, è uscito. A questo punto della storia, Luciano e Carina non hanno ancora fatto l’amore, ma una serie di circostanze ha permesso loro di vedersi senza vestiti addosso.

Una volta solo, la mente di Luciano si riempì immediatamente di allettanti immagini di Carina. Avrebbe tanto voluto sapere cos’era successo la notte prima per far sì che se ne andasse in fretta e furia, senza il portamonete che stava cercando. Si alzò in piedi e sollevò il secchio dell’acqua. Riempì il mestolo, e ne verso il contenuto sui sassi. Vapori incandescenti si alzarono sfrigolando, e lui girò il viso di lato per evitare di bruciarsi gli occhi. Tornò a sedersi sulla panca. Appena un attimo dopo, la porta si aprì.

“Hai deciso di tornare per torturarmi ancora un po’, Filippo?”. La sua risata si spense nell’istante in cui i suoi occhi incontrarono quelli della ragazza.
Carina trattenne il fiato. Era curiosa di vedere com’era fatta la sauna, ma non si era aspettata di trovarci il conte così di buon’ora.
Piena di vergogna per aver fatto intrusione nel bagno privato di un uomo, si girò per andarsene. Il tono di comando dell’uomo quando pronunciò il suo nome la fece fermare di colpo.

Lei abbassò gli occhi sul pavimento. “My lord, mi devo davvero scusare. Non sapevo che foste qui.”

“Avevate in mente di usare il bagno?”

“No, my lord. Ero curiosa, tutto qui.”

Il silenzio dell’uomo le fece sollevare il capo. Obbligò se stessa a non far scivolare lo sguardo giù sul suo torace luccicante, e lo tenne fisso negli occhi di lui, che scintillavano divertiti. Gocce di traspirazione le rotolarono giù lungo le tempie e tra i seni. In pochi secondi, la sua leggera tunica le si appiccicò aderendo al corpo.

“Chiudete la porta, Carina. State facendo uscire il vapore.”

Lei arretrò.

“No, ragazza. Non andatevene. Venite dentro e chiudete la porta dietro di voi.”

Il tono basso e vibrante della sua voce le mandò un brivido di apprensione lungo la spina dorsale. “Visto che siete qui, unitevi a me.”

Un senso d’allarme la circondò. “No, my lord. Sarebbe una cosa indecente .”

“Su, andiamo, Carina. Non ci siamo forse già visti senza vestiti addosso?”

Era per quella ragione che non avrebbe accondisceso alla sua richiesta. La vista di lui senza vestiti scatenava il lato lussurioso che c’era in lei, e Carina temeva le conseguenze.

“Non posso, my lord.”

Lui si alzò, maestoso come un dio della mitologia antica, e le si avvicinò muovendosi con eleganza. Lei premette la schiena contro la porta, cercando affannosamente la maniglia con la mano. Sarebbe fuggita, se solo fosse riuscita a trovare quella maledetta maniglia. Mentre il conte le si avvicinava con decisione, nelle profondità del suo essere si scatenò il panico. Le sue dita non fecero in tempo a sfiorare l’ottone caldo della maniglia, che il conte Ruggero l’allontanò a forza dalla porta e se la strinse contro il corpo umido. La sua bocca era ad un respiro di distanza da quella di lei.

“Vi prego, my lord,” sussurrò lei. “Vi prego, lasciatemi andare.”

“Sì, mia dolce fanciulla. Vi libererò quando voi libererete me dall’esilio che mi sono imposto da solo. Da due anni d’inferno,” lui disse con voce roca. “da troppi mesi passati standomene disteso nel mio letto da solo la notte, a desiderare che una bella ragazza venisse da me e riuscisse a farmi dimenticare i miei guai.”

La volontà di Carina andò in frantumi nell’istante in cui le loro labbra si incontrarono. La decenza si smarrì nel calore soffocante del vapore e nella sensazione del duro corpo del conte premuto contro il suo. Si arrese a quella combinazione inebriante e all’urgenza del suo bacio. Di colpo, il bisogno di lui contagiò il suo e lei gli circondò la vita con le braccia, allargando le dita sui forti muscoli della sua schiena. Quando il bacio si approfondì, Carina si sentì del tutto priva di difese, e si rese conto che resistere al conte Ruggero non faceva parte dei suoi piani per il prossimo futuro.

- Welcome back, Jannine, and thanks for allowing us to know a bit more your latest release, KNIGHT’S DESIRE!
Would you like to tell us something about it? We were really impressed by its original settings - even for an author fond of Italian Middle Age and renaissance as you are, 14th century’s Piemonte is a peculiar choice indeed. How did this idea come to you? Were you struck, perhaps, by the beautiful castles in Piemonte and val d’Aosta during your Italian stay?

I was in Italy for a few months in 1970 and lived with my uncle, who was an Italian air force general at that time. He lived outside Rome, and I didn’t have the chance to travel to Northern or Southern Italy. However, I’m an “armchair traveller.” I have several hundred books on Italy, as well as many travel videos on Italian cities and regions.
I had originally written KNIGHT’S DESIRE for an anthology in which each story revolves around a knight. I left the controversial publisher in December 2007, and less than a month later I sold the short story to The Dark Castle Lords, an ebook publisher who will soon offer print books as well. The story is 21,000 words, and it marks the first and only short story romance I’ve ever written. I wasn’t sure if I could do it. I’m used to writing 90,000 to 100,000 word books.
Because the era of knights in Italy was vastly different from the rest of Europe—which I had discovered through research for other stories I’ve written that are set in Medieval/Renaissance Italy—I knew I had to approach the story from a different point of view. I am lucky to know and have the opportunity to ask questions of a professor who specializes in Medieval and Renaissance Italy and has lectured internationally. Regarding knights in Italy, I offer this explanation on the Author’s Notes page.
The process of Italy’s history was complicated. It was divided by 1) city-states in the north and central regions, 2) the Papal States across the middle, and 3) the kingdom of Naples/Sicily in the south. Although there were certain areas of Northern Italy where feudal traditions prevailed, there was no strong or enduring set of codes and traditions, like those found in feudal Northern Europe. Therefore, in practice, Italy did not follow so closely those various chivalric traditions, codes and formalities of knighthood as recorded in most of Europe.
I like that the knighthood in Italy wasn’t at all like the other countries. It gave me more freedom as a writer to indulge my characters and the plot. In all my Italian set historical romances, my heroines are quite aggressive for their time. I almost take them to the extreme, such as the heroine in SURRENDER TO HONOR. She wears armour and men’s clothes, and she wields a mighty bow and arrow. She also lives in the forest with men whose homes were wrongly confiscated. My heroines don’t hold back if they see something that needs fixing…such as the hero. And my heroes are extremely macho, although they all have a sensitive side that the heroines somehow bring out.
As for how the idea came to me, I couldn’t tell you. When I think up plots, I see them in my head in black and white, a mixture of photos and video clips. Sometimes a word someone says will start a story’s thought process, or a song I hear, even a picture. For KNIGHT’S DESIRE I asked myself what would happen if a woman—with no father, husband, brother, or betrothed to look after her—lived alone in a castle that didn’t belong to her family but was owned by the neighbouring noble family? How would she go about securing possession of what she believed was her family home? Then I decided to have the hero coming home from a long campaign after his father dies. The only way I could think of to get her an audience with the knight was to have her sneak into his castle upon his return and pretend she worked for him. It somewhat backfires on her, especially when he discovers who she is and the reason she’s in his home. He tells her the only way he’ll sign over the keep (which was the only part of her father’s castle left standing) to her is if she seduces him for it.

Vuoi parlarcene un po’? Siamo state molto colpite dall’originalità dell’ambientazione – anche per un’autrice appassionata del Medioevo e del Rinascimento italiano come te, il Piemonte del 14mo secolo è davvero una scelta particolare. Come ti è venuta quest’idea? Per caso sei stata colpita dai bellissimi castelli del Piemonte e della Val d’Aosta durante il tuo soggiorno in Italia?

Ho passato alcuni mesi in Italia nel 1970 e all’epoca abitavo da mio zio, che era un generale dell’aeronautica italiana. Viveva appena fuori Roma, e non ho avuto la possibilità di viaggiare nell’Italia del nord o del sud. Comunque, sono una “viaggiatrice sedentaria.” Ho parecchie centinaia di libri sull’Italia, ed altrettanti video di viaggi nelle varie città e regioni italiane
Inizialmente, avevo scritto KNIGHT’S DESIRE per un’antologia in cui ognuna delle storie ruota intorno ad un cavaliere. Ho lasciato il mio editore, che è coinvolto in una causa, nel dicembre 2007, e meno di un mese dopo ho venduto il racconto a The Dark Castle Lords, una casa editrice di ebooks che presto metterà in commercio anche libri in formato cartaceo. E’ una storia di 21.000 parole, ed è il primo e unico racconto breve che io abbia mai scritto in campo romance. Non ero sicura di riuscire a scriverlo. Di solito scrivo libri di lunghezza compresa tra le 90,000 e le 100,000 parole.
Visto che l’epoca dei cavalieri in Italia è stata diversissima da quella del resto d’Europa—è una scoperta che ho fatto mentre facevo ricerche per altre storie che ho scritto in passato, ambientate nell’Italia Medievale/rinascimentale—sapevo che avrei dovuto affrontare il racconto da un punto di vista diverso. Ho la fortuna di conoscere un professore specializzato nell’Italia Medievale/rinascimentale, che tiene conferenze e lezioni in tutto il mondo, e di potergli fare delle domande. Circa i cavalieri in Italia, Questa è la spiegazione che ho inserito nella pagina dedicate alle Note dell’Autore.
Il processo di creazione dell’Italia fu complesso. Era divisa in 1) le città-stato nel nord e nel centro, 2) lo Stato della Chiesa al centro, e 3) il regno di Napoli e delle Due Sicilie al sud. Benché ci fossero delle aree nell’Italia del nord in cui prevalevano le tradizioni feudali, non c’era nessun codice o tradizione forte o consolidata, come quelli che si incontrano nel Nord Europa feudale. Perciò, in pratica, l’Italia non seguì così strettamente le varie tradizioni, codici di comportamento e formalismi del cavalierato come invece avveniva nel resto d’ Europa, secondo le testimonianze storiche.
Apprezzo il fatto che la cavalleria in Italia non sia stata affatto simile a quella degli altri paesi. Mi ha dato più gradi di libertà come scrittrice, permettendomi di dedicare più tempo ai personaggi e alla trama. In tutti i miei romanzi storici di ambientazione italiana, le mie eroine sono piuttosto aggressive per l’epoca. Le spingo quasi al punto estremo, come nel caso dell’eroina di SURRENDER TO HONOR. Lei indossa l’armatura ed abiti maschili, usa un arco potente e le frecce. Inoltre, vive nella foresta insieme ad alcuni uomini le cui case sono state confiscate ingiustamente. Le mie eroine non si tirano indietro, se vedono qualcosa che dev’essere sistemato …e così pure fanno gli eroi. Ed i miei eroi sono molto virili, benché abbiano tutti un lato sensibile che le eroine in qualche modo riescono a tirar fuori.
Circa il modo in cui mi è venuta l’idea per la storia, non saprei dirvi. Quando immagino le trame, le vedo nella mia mente in bianco e nero, una miscela di foto e di video. Qualche volta per farmi iniziare a creare mentalmente una storia mi basta una parola detta da qualcuno, o una canzone che ho ascoltato tempo prima, o anche una foto. Nel caso di KNIGHT’S DESIRE mi sono chiesta, cosa succederebbe ad una donna—senza padre, né marito, né fratello o fidanzato che badassero a lei— che vive da sola in un castello che non appartiene alla sua famiglia, ma è di proprietà di una famiglia di nobili che abitano vicini? Come farebbe a garantirsi il possesso di quella che ritiene sia la sua casa di famiglia? A questo punto, ho deciso che l’eroe sarebbe stato un soldato reduce da una lunga campagna militare, che ritorna a casa dopo la morte di suo padre. Il suolo modo in cui sono riuscita ad immaginare per farle avere un’udienza col cavaliere è stato far sì che sgattaiolasse nel castello poco dopo il suo ritorno, fingendo di lavorare per lui. La cosa si ritorce in qualche modo contro di lei, specialmente quando lui scopre che è e la ragione per cui si trova nella sua casa. Le dice che l’unica strada perchè lui le affidi per iscritto la roccaforte (l’unica parte rimasta in piedi del castello del padre di lei) è che lei accetti di venire sedotta.


- How difficult it was for you the research work for this story? Historical records for that period should be quite hard to find...

Piemonte’s history was challenging to research. I kept the area broad and didn’t pinpoint a small town because of the lack of information. I own a few books on Piemonte, and I also researched online. I used the climate and general regional descriptions, but the castle and town are made up. It’s the first Italian medieval I’ve written that doesn’t use a historical fact or figures, mainly because the entire story was supposed to be around 20,000 words. That’s not long enough to delve into a city’s history and weave it throughout the story.
The first subject I researched for this book was the knighthood in Italy (It was near to impossible to locate the information I needed.), and discovered the northern regions with their city-states were most likely to have Italian knights owning their own castles.
Unfortunately, my Italian isn’t so good anymore. So when I find a great site for research, I usually get frustrated with trying to translate the information. So I have to stay with the sites that are in English only and that is limiting.

- E’ stato difficile fare ricerche per questa storia? Visto il periodo, la documentazione storica probabilmente è difficile da trovare...

Fare ricerche sulla storia del Piemonte è stata una vera sfida. Vista la mancanza di informazioni ho svolto ricerche su un’area grande, senza focalizzarmi su una piccola città specifica. Possiedo alcuni libri sul Piemonte, e ho anche fatto ricerche online. Ho usato le descrizioni generali del clima e della regione, ma il castello e la città sono immaginari. E’ la prima storia medievale italiana che scrivo senza utilizzare fatti o personaggi storici, soprattutto perchè la storia complessivamente doveva risultare all’incirca di 20.000 parole. Non è una lunghezza sufficiente per approfondire la storia di una città e raccontarla nel corso del libro .
Il primo argomento su cui ho fatto ricerche per scrivere questo è stato il sistema cavalleresco in Italia (è stato quasi impossibile recuperare le informazioni che mi servivano), e ho scoperto che le regioni del Nord con le loro città-stato erano le regioni italiane con la maggior probabilità di avere cavalieri che possedessero dei castelli.
Sfortunatamente, il mio italiano è un po’ arrugginito. Perciò quando trovo un buon sito per le mie ricerche, di solito vengo presa dalla frustrazione mentre cerco di tradurre le informazioni. Così mi devo limitare ai siti in inglese, e questa è un problema.

- Were the plot’s and characters’ choice in KNIGHT’S DESIRE somehow influenced by the setting?

There’s no yes or no answer for this question. The setting and the characters go hand-in-hand. In other words, one influences the other, but I couldn’t tell you if one was more influential than the other.

- La scelta della trama e dei personaggi di KNIGHT’S DESIRE è stata in qualche modo influenzata dall’ambientazione?

Non si può rispondere né sì né no a questa domanda. L’ambientazione ed i personaggi vanno avanti di pari passo. In altre parole, l’uno influenza l’altro, ma non saprei dirvi chi abbia avuto l’influenza maggiore.

- You have written several stories with an Italian setting, but your readers are mainly living in the US. How do you deal in your books with the several stereotypes about Italy and Italians?

I’m a member of the Order Sons of Italy in America. The organization is constantly battling against the Italian stereotypes in America. I know the Sons of Italy organization is against Italians being identified by the mafia. I look at it as part of our cultural history. SURRENDER TO HONOR, is about the beginning of the mafia in 15th century Palermo. In my writing, I take facts and weave a story around them. If it was part of the history, then I add it to my plot. I also believe that writing historical romances allows me to be honest in the telling of the story, whereas today everyone is sensitive about their culture being perceived in a bad light.
I have written many articles about various aspects of Italy, Italians and our culture for Italian-American newspapers. So far, no one has complained about the subjects for my articles which include how the mafia began, soccer (go A.C. Milan <g>), historical figures, and so much more.

- Hai scritto parecchi romanzi di ambientazione italiana, ma i tuoi lettori sono soprattutto negli USA. Come affronti nei tuoi libri i vari stereotipi sull’Italia e sugli Italiani?

Faccio parte dell’Associazione americana “Sons of Italy” ( “Figli dell’Italia”). L’organizzazione si batte costantemente contro gli stereotipi sugli Italiani che circolano in America. So che l’Associazione “Sons of Italy” viene identificata con la mafia da chi è contro gli Italiani. Io la vedo come una parte della nostra storia culturale. SURRENDER TO HONOR parla dell’inizio della mafia nella Palermo del 15mo secolo. Quando scrivo, prendo dei fatti e vi intesso una storia intorno. Se questi fatti fanno parte della storia, allora li includo nella trama. Ritengo anche che il fatto di scrivere romanzi storici mi permetta di essere onesta mentre scrivo, mentre al giorno d’oggi tutti sono preoccupati del fatto che la loro cultura d’origine possa venire percepita in cattiva luce.
Ho scritto vari articoli sui vari aspetti dell’Italia, degli Italiani e della nostra cultura per giornali italo-americani. Fino ad ora, nessuno ha protestato circa gli argomenti dei miei articoli che includono com’è iniziata la mafia, il calcio ( viva il Milan! eheh ), personaggi storici, e moltissime altre cose.

- It’s the first time that one of your stories is released through an ebook publisher. What do you think of the experience? What are the pros and the cons vs. “standard” publishing?

Actually, in 2001 I had a book published—FOREIGN EXCHANGE—that was in ebook and print formats. At that time, ebooks were quite new, and I was leery of them. Needless to say, the experience was not a good one.
With KNIGHT’S DESIRE, I am more knowledgeable now and actually find it easier to have an ebook when I hold a contest to give away a copy. I can send the winner my book through the internet and save on postage. But I’m a traditionalist, and I like holding a print book in my hands. With my present publisher, the ebook experience has been wonderful. In fact, I’m going to write two novellas, one set in Marostica around the 1454 chess game, and the other in Venice that will have something to do with a masquerade ball.

- E’ la prima volta che vieni pubblicata da una casa editrice di ebooks. Com’è stata questa esperienza? Quali sono i pro e i contro, rispetto ad una pubblicazione “standard”?

A dir la verità, nel 2001 uno dei miei libri—FOREIGN EXCHANGE—è stato pubblicato sia in ebook che in formato cartaceo. All’epoca, gli ebooks erano una vera novità, ed io ero sospettosa nei loro confronti. Inutile dire che l’esperienza non fu positiva.
Nel caso di KNIGHT’S DESIRE, adesso conosco meglio l’argomento e trovo davvero più facile organizzare un concorso e mettere in palio un ebook. Posso mandare il mio libro al vincitore con internet senza spese postali. Ma sono una tradizionalista, e mi piace stringere un libro vero tra le mani. Con il mio attuale editore, l’esperienza di uscire in ebook è stata fantastica. Infatti, scriverò due romanzi brevi, uno ambientato a Marostica che racconta della partita a scacchi del 1454, l’altro a Venezia, ed avrà qualcosa a che fare con un ballo in maschera.


- We are waiting to see how the Medieval series you started with THE LILY AND THE FALCON will continue. Any news about that? Is there anything you’d like to tell us about your upcoming projects?

Unfortunately, I am no longer with the publisher who had contracted THE LILY AND THE FALCON and SURRENDER TO HONOR, books one and two in my four-book Italian Medieval series. Both books would have been in stores by now. I am presently shopping the series around; however, I come up against the same old story. Editors are hesitant to buy a romance with an Italian medieval setting from a relatively unknown author. They believe the era combined with the location isn’t popular among readers. I disagree, of course!
I may have listed the series in my last interview.But for those who haven’t read it, here is how the Italian Medieval series goes.
All books are in the 15th century. Secondary characters from the first book are either a hero or a heroine in the following three books.

Book 1: THE LILY AND THE FALCON…(Florence) This book is about the exile of Cosimo de’ Medici and the family’s battle with the Albizzi over who will rule Florence.

Book 2: SURRENDER TO HONOR…(Palermo) Here I delve into the beginning of the mafia.

Book 3: DANTE’S FLAME…(Naples) This is about the French-Spanish battle for the Kingdom of Naples.

Book 4: TEMPT NOT MY HEART…(Siena) I’ve set this story around the Palio. This is the only book that isn’t written yet.

I also have a psychic sisters trilogy set in the 15th century, but only the first book is written. I am shopping this trilogy around. Here are the titles in order and the country in which the story is set listed beside each title:

CARINA AND THE NOBLEMAN (Po Valley, Italy)
CHARLOTTE AND THE GYPSY (Andalusia, Spain)
CALLIE AND THE KNIGHT (London, England)

I have done research on (but haven’t had the chance to write) DECEIVED (I may change it to BETRAYED), which takes place at the start of World War II. It will be a mainstream novel with romantic elements. The story is centered on the Italian internment in San Francisco, California. The hero is in U.S. Army Intelligence and comes home to San Francisco on a secret assignment. He learns his family and friends have been interred as enemy aliens. He deals with his conscience and whether or not he can go on and do his job for his country. He also deals with prejudice from non-Italians and from the father of the woman he’s in love with.
There are many other stories I plan to write, but the above are my main focus for the next several years, along with a few historical western romances I had written over 10 years ago and that I will rewrite.
My goal as an author is to write a book in as many historical Italian towns as possible. I started off with Florence (my father’s family, although my father was born on Ponza) and Sicily (my mother’s family).

On one last note, I would like to say that out of all the interviews I’ve done over the years, this one is near and dear to my heart, and my favourite place to be. Thank you all for allowing me to share my work with you.

- Siamo ansiose di vedere la continuazione della tua serie medievale, che inizia con THE LILY AND THE FALCON. Ci sono novità al riguardo? Ci puoi anticipare qualcosa sui tuoi progetti futuri?

Sfortunatamente, non lavoro più per l’editore con cui ero sotto contratto per THE LILY AND THE FALCON e SURRENDER TO HONOR, il primo e il secondo libro rispettivamente della mia serie medievale italiana in quattro libri. Tutt’e due i libri avrebbero dovuto già essere in vendita, di questi tempi. Al momento sto proponendo la serie ad altri editori; però mi sto imbattendo nella solita, vecchia storia. Gli editori esitano a comprare un romanzo con un’ambientazione medievale italiana da un’autrice relativamente poco nota. Credono che questa combinazione di epoca ed ambientazione non sia popolare tra i lettori. Io non sono d’accordo, ovviamente!
Nella mia ultima intervista ho spiegato la struttura della serie. Ma per coloro che non l’avessero letta, ecco come è organizzata la mia serie medievale italiana.
Tutti i romanzi sono ambientati nel 15mo secolo. I personaggi secondari del primo libro diventano l’eroe, o l’eroina a secondo dei casi, dei tre libri successivi.

Viene a sapere che la sua famiglia ed i suoi amici sono stati internati come nemici stranieri. Deve fare i conti con la propria coscienza e decidere se può andare avanti a lavorare per la sua patria, oppure no. Deve anche scontrarsi con i pregiudizi dei non-Italiani e del padre della donna di cui è innamorato.
Ci sono molte altre storie che ho in progetto di scrivere, ma quelle che ho citato restano il mio obiettivo generale per i prossimi anni, insieme ad alcuni romance di ambientazione western che ho scritto oltre 10 anni fa e che intendo riscrivere.
Il mio obiettivo in quanto autrice è di scrivere libri su quante più città italiane mi sarà possible. Ho iniziato con Firenze (la famiglia di mio padre viene da lì, anche se mio padre è nato a Ponza) e la Sicilia (a causa della famiglia di mia madre).

Per finire, vorrei dire che di tutte le interviste che ho rilasciato nel corso degli anni, questa è vicina al mio cuore e mi è cara, e questo gruppo è il mio preferito. Grazie a voi tutte per avermi permesso di condividere con voi il mio lavoro.

In this scene, Mariella sought advice on how to seduce a man from another servant in the knight's castle. She is about to put her newfound knowledge into motion.

Knots twisted her stomach as Mariella climbed the stairs. She prayed she’d remember all Rene had taught her. Grateful for her newfound friend, Mariella mumbled Rene’s instructions under her breath. By the time she stood outside the knight’s chamber, her body was covered by the heat of a blush that refused to go away.
She turned her nose down to sniff her underarms. “This is not good.”
The labors of the past days clung to her with an unpleasant odor. Mayhap the knight would not notice she hadn’t bathed in three days. After all, he was used to bedding down near men who had not seen a bath in weeks, perhaps months. Would that she could bathe away her smell and fears.
“The keep, Mariella. Remember, you are going through with this for Father’s keep.”
Her hand trembled on the door handle. She prayed the knight was already asleep in bed. Instead, she found him walking out of the adjoining room. They both stopped and stared.
“I shall turn down your bed,” Mariella said, wishing her throat wouldn’t constrict. It made speaking a chore.
The knight nodded but did not move. When she finished, she waited in awkward silence for him to bid her to something more. She’d remove her shoes and hose, but she knew not if he wanted to watch again.
Finally, he walked over to his chest and pulled off his boots and hose. Only his thigh-length undertunic remained, which he usually wore in the privacy of his chamber.
“Your pardon, messere.” He kept his back to her, giving her the chance to appreciate the sturdiness of those bare legs she had viewed at close range just two days past. “May I bathe in the servants’ quarters?”
“You may bathe. However, you will make use of my personal tub.” He came around then, a light of amusement in his eyes. “And I will be here to help you.”

ESTRATTO

In questa scena, Mariella ha chiesto ad un’altra serva del castello del cavaliere qualche consiglio su come sedurre un uomo. E si sta preparando a mettere in pratica le nuove conoscenze….


Mariella sentiva lo stomaco stretto come in una morsa mentre saliva le scale. She pregò di ricordarsi tutto ciò che René le aveva insegnato. Riconoscente per aver trovato questa nuova amica, Mariella ripetè sottovoce le istruzioni di René. Quando arrivò di fronte alla porta della camera del cavaliere, era tutta accaldata e rossa per un senso di imbarazzo che rifiutava di andarsene.
Abbassò la testa, si annusò le ascelle e borbottò, “Così non va bene.”
I lavori pesanti dei giorni precedenti le avevano lasciato addosso un odore sgradevole. Forse il cavaliere non si sarebbe accorto che non aveva fatto un bagno da tre giorni. Dopo tutto, era abituato a dormire accanto a uomini che non avevano visto un bagno per settimane, magari anche per mesi. Se solo avesse potuto eliminare con un bagno non solo il proprio odore, ma anche le sue paure.
“La proprietà, Mariella. Ricordati, stai facendo tutto questo per la proprietà di tuo padre.”
La mano le tremava mentre la posò sulla maniglia della porta. Pregò che il cavaliere fosse già a letto, addormentato. Invece, lo trovò che usciva dalla stanza accanto. Entrambi si fermarono e rimasero lì a fissarsi.
“Vi preparo il letto,” disse Mariella, desiderando che la gola non le si chiudesse così. Parlare in quelle condizioni era un’impresa.
Il cavaliere annuì, ma non si mosse. Quando lei ebbe finito, aspettò a disagio ed in silenzio che l’uomo le chiedesse di fare qualcos’altro. Si sarebbe tolta le scarpe e le calze, ma non sapeva se lui avrebbe avuto voglia di starla a guardare.
Alla fine, lui si diresse verso il baule e si sfilò stivali e calzamaglia. Rimase con addosso solo la tunica che gli arrivava all’altezza delle cosce, e che normalmente usava nell’intimità della sua camera.
“Con il vostro permesso, messere.” Lui le dava la schiena, dandole la possibilità di apprezzare la solidità di quelle gambe nude che aveva visto da vicino solo due giorni prima. “Posso farmi un bagno nei quartieri della servitù?”
“Puoi farti il bagno. Però, userai la mia vasca personale.” L’uomo le si avvicinò, con gli occhi che gli brillavano divertiti. “Ed io resterò lì ad aiutarti.”

Intro:
With the re-release of The Lily and the Falcon, readers will get to see into the splendor of Medieval Florence. The book is the first in a four-book series. The second, Surrender to Honor, is set in Medieval Palermo and will be released for the first time in Spring 2008. The last two books in that series are Dante’s Flame, set in Medeival Naples, and Tempt Not My Heart, set in Medieval Siena. Books 2-4 each have a hero or heroine who was a secondary character in The Lily and the Falcon.

Bio:
Award winning and internationally published author, Jannine Corti Petska was born in New York to Italian parents who didn’t learn English until later in life. When Jannine was eighteen, she lived in Italy for several months with her uncle, an Italian Air Force General, and his family. Every day, she was surrounded by the true Italian culture and exposed to the beauty and romance of Italy’s past, which fostered her love for historical Italy, especially the 15th century.

Jannine didn’t pursue writing until well after her three daughters were born. In the early eighties, she attended a romance writer’s conference in San Diego, California. From then on, she knew writing romances was what she wanted to do. It wasn’t until the mid-nineties that she became serious about getting published. She sold her first book, The Lily and the Falcon, to Kensington in 1999.

She is currently a member of the San Diego chapter of the Romance Writers of America, Romance Writer’s of America National Organization, PAN (Published Authors Network), along with dozens of other online writing chapters.

Jannine lives in Southern California with her husband of 35 years and their four dogs, who have the run of their house.

Throughout history, men have tested their strength, endurance, and skill in ways that have often seemed barbaric. And the medieval games of Siena , Italy were a prime example of this quest to be hailed a champion.

One such contest, the Pugna (or Giuoco delle Pugna ), involved both the local townsmen and the military. A game similar to boxing, it began as an all-against-all fistfight in the streets. But in 1324, a Pugna between the three sections of town – with 600 men to a side – ended violently when the hand-to-hand combat turned into stone throwing and then to the use of swords and lances.

To break up the melee, the Bishop, along with priests and friars from all the religious orders in Siena , gathered at the Piazza del Campo, holding a processional cross, slowly parading their way through the thick of the battle until the combatants quieted down. To prohibit any repetitions of the violence, the government abolished the Pugna in 1325.

Another peculiar sport of Siena was the Asinate , or donkey fights. In this game, each contrada (neighborhood) would choose a captain, a youth to carry the district's banner, and a donkey to be painted in the colors of the contrada . Taking place in the Piazza del Campo, the object of the Asinate was to ride the donkeys around the square and the first team to finish two complete circles won. But having learned their lesson from the Pugna , in these games the Sienese did not allow arms, and anyone violating these strict rules faced both corporal and financial punishment.

Only one contest, however, has survived the centuries – the Palio – a horse race that existed well before the 11 th century, and took place two times a year: on July 2 (in honor of the Madonna who had miraculously appeared to Provenzan Salvani, the hero of the Battle of Montraperti) as well as on August 15 (a day dedicated to the Madonna of the Assumption).

The name of the race was synonymous with the prize awarded to the contrada who won the race. A misrepresentation of the Latin word pallium (meaning a rectangular piece of cloth), a palio was a wool, silk, or velvet rectangular piece of cloth which bore a representation of the Virgin Mary. (However, sometimes the palii , or yards of expensive silk or wool, were also awarded).

Prior to 1555, young men would carry colored wooden structures representing an animal during the Palio , followed by a procession of townsfolk. After 1555, however, each district began to organize a headquarters in order to define territorial limits and announce specific rules. Each headquarters soon developed its own badge, colors, animal of distinction, its own church and religious staff, and a stable for its horse.

From the beginning, pride played a huge role in these races; the horses were decked out as colorfully as their riders, and the streets of both each district and the individual supporters were decorated in the same colors as their horse.

But while the town divided their loyalties amongst the riders, the days leading up to the races were set aside for a festival in which the women decorated the streets with flowers and banners in the colors of their contrada . These were happy times for the town, and the friendly competition amongst the neighborhoods to see which one could out-decorate the other was performed to lift the spirits of the Sienese.

Later in the medieval period, the horse race – previously run in a straight line through the streets – was run along the outer rim of the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. Although the actual race ended in less than 90 seconds, the incline of the Piazza proved to be a dangerous course and over time, many animals were injured or killed when they lost their footing and slipped down the slope of the dirt track. But despite the shortness of it, the winner was hailed a hero, and the contrada who won was deemed superior above all the others…at least until the next palio .

Florence, Italy, 1433

The wedding celebrations have ended, and Cristiano de' Medici and his wife are in their bedchamber. Both have secrets that could destroy their marriage and the precious union between two opposing families.

"Do not be frightened. I will not hurt you."

"Forgive me, my lord, but I find no comfort in that. A man of your size..."

"Do you not trust me?"

"As you said, I do not know you well enough."

"You will, Bianca. Very soon." She trembled beneath his fingertips as he eased her wool hose down. It couldn't have pleased him more. He brought her up to her knees again, stilling her fingers pleating the bottom of her chemise. Cristiano smiled.

He pulled off his undertunic, grimacing when his raised arms pinched sore muscles. But the ever increasing stiffness was soon forgotten when he saw the awestruck expression frozen on Bianca's face. Clearly she had never seen a man's bare chest up close before now. He cupped her jaw, brushing his thumb over her smooth cheek, befuddled anew when she winced as she had before.

"Never wear face powder again," he told her, disliking the feel of it. Her skin was too naturally pure, too silken and beautiful to be hidden by beauty aids women fancied to lighten their color. Bianca needed none of it.

She nodded absently. Her vigilant stare at the black pelt of hair on his chest made Cristiano chuckle, the sound vibrating and rippling his warrior's physique. Aware that the sight of his body had pleased so many other women, he wanted it only to please Bianca now. He glanced down at the lock of her hair dangling from the gold chain around his neck. Against his dark chest, it was like dawn protruding a midnight sky.

He placed her palm against his chest, her hand trembling slightly as it touched his flesh. He, too, trembled from her caress, wishing she had reached for him of her own free will. In time, she would. In time, she'd know that he was not her enemy.

All that remained a barrier were her chemise and his hose. Cristiano had not lost sight of his earlier anger and misgivings, but he held all aside until he satisfied one last part of his curiosity. He stripped the final shroud hiding her secret. Gesu, he was not prepared.

He inhaled sharply and took no notice that Bianca held her breath even deeper. She had the perfect figure-hips flared gently, sloping inward to the smallest waist he'd ever seen on a woman. Her ribs stepped up to support her breasts, the only part of her which had undeniably deceived him. Her willowy length and the layers of clothes she wore had hidden her well.

He brought his hands up to cup those ivory breasts, and they quivered as his thumbs feathered their deep pink tips. Aroused, the peaks were hard, beckoning a more intimate touch. He dared not indulge himself any further, else he'd not be able to stop until his need was fulfilled and he spilled his seed within her.

When Cristiano withdrew his hand, her protesting moan nearly broke the weakened line of his resistance. "Now tell me, Bianca. Know you the truth? Am I the monster you proclaim me to be? Or am I simply a man with a wife tempting his mortal soul and befuddling his often sharp mind?"

Firenze, Italia, 1433

Ma anche la crescente rigidità fu presto dimenticata quando vide l'espressione congelata sul volto di Bianca. Chiaramente lei non aveva mai visto il petto nudo di un uomo così da vicino prima d'ora. Lui avvolse il volto di lei tra le sue mani, sfregando il suo pollice sulla sua guancia liscia, andando di nuovo in confusione quando lei sussultò come aveva fatto prima.

"Non mettere mai più della cipria", le disse lui, non apprezzando la sensazione sulla sua pelle. Tutto ciò che rimaneva come barriera era la sottoveste di lei e le brache di lui. La sua figura sottile e gli strati di vestiti che indossava l'avevano nascosta per bene.

Lui allungò le sue mani a prendere a coppa quei seni d'avorio, e loro tremarono mentre i suoi pollici sfioravano leggermente i capezzoli di un rosa intenso. Eccitati, i capezzoli erano duri, invitando un tocco ancora più intimo. Lui non osò indulgere ancora di più, altrimenti non sarebbe stato capace di fermarsi fino a che il suo bisogno non fosse stato soddisfatto e non avesse versato il suo seme dentro di lei.

Quando Cristiano tirò indietro la mano, il gemito di protesta di lei quasi infranse il debole filo della sua resistenza. "Ora ditemi, Bianca. La sapete la verità? Sono il mostro che voi avete dichiarato che fossi? O sono semplicemente un uomo con una moglie che sta tentando la sua anima mortale e mettendo in confusione la sua usualmente astuta mente?"

Desperate she turns to a blue eyed half-American for help in escaping the murderous treacherous regime, but begins to have doubts about he is who he claims to be as she considers he may be undercover Gestapo seeking to find doubters.

PERFIDIA is an entertaining WWII romantic suspense that grips the audience from the moment the Nazis invade Poland and never lets up until the final attempt to escape the violent regime. The story line is fast-paced as Sophie lands in one mess after another while too easily rescuing friends from the invincible all mighty Gestapo, who are every where, yet unable to deal with an inexperienced young female. Still historical romance fans will enjoy this vivid strong look from inside the Third Reich as seen mostly through the eyes of a former admirer who observing first hand the atrocities becomes an enemy of the state. Perfidia è un romantic suspence ambientato durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale che avvince il lettore dal momento in cui i Nazisti invadono la Polonia e non lo lascia mai fino al tentativo finale di fuggire da un regime violento. La trama ha un ritmo veloce mentre Sophie atterra in un disastro dopo l'altro mentre troppo facilmente salva amici dall'invincibile Gestapo, che è dappertutto, tuttavia incapace di trattare con una giovane donna senza esperienza. Tuttavia le fan del romanzo storico apprezzeranno questa sguardo vivace dall'interno del Terzo Reich come visto per la maggior parte attraverso gli occhi di un precedente ammiratrice che osservando di prima mano le atrocità diventa un nemico dello stato. CASTLE OF THE WOLF is a fun gothic romance with a delightful supernatural spin to freshen up the story line. Celia is an obstinate heroine refusing to give up on her beloved beast even when his tortured soul makes her wonder if he is also performing evil deeds. Although for the most part Sandra Schwab employs the rudiments of the classic gothic thriller, the gargoyles add enough of a spin so that sub-genre fans will appreciate the tale and root for Celia to find happiness and contentment. Castle of the Wolf è una storia d'amore gotica con una deliziosa svolta sovrannaturale per rinfrescare la trama. Celia è una eroina ostinata che rifiuta di cedere la sua amata bestia anche quando l'anima tormentata di lui le fa domandarsi se lui sta facendo anche delle azioni malvagie. Sebbene per la maggior parte Sandra Schwab impieghi i rudimenti del thriller classico gotico, i gargoyle sono una svolta originale così che le fan del genere apprezzeranno il racconto e seguiranno Celia nel trovare felicità e soddisfazione.
